Jean Marie DeSpiegler
Jean Marie DeSpiegler

This class will primarily focus on soldering to combine ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as bending the steel with very little muscle. You may work in fine silver, sterling, or gold. The class will cover a cuff bracelet with non-ferrous appliques and how bend a steel nail into a ring.
You will learn how to achieve the black patina as well as a bare finish. We will discuss what to look for in found objects. You are encouraged to explore this medium and create your own designs as well.

Some familiarity with acetylene/air torch is recommended, but beginners are welcome!
You will be provided with steel, but are encouraged to bring found objects. Look for anything that is rusty. This usually indicates high iron content. Look for anything that is thin, if you plan to bend them. The thicker and heavier the piece the more heat it will require; which in turn requires a forge, which we do not plan to work in. Found objects are fun, inexpensive and guarantee a one-of-a-kind piece. Please no galvanized or stainless steel. Please keep the packages if you buy anything new with which to experiment, as we need to know the content.
