Chasing and Repoussé - John Cogswell

Chasing and Repoussé is a process in which two companion techniques are used to create dimensional surfaces on sheet metal. ‘Chasing’ refers to the defining work done from the front, usually performed with blunt, chisel-like tools. ‘Repoussé’ refers to the forming, or embossing, work performed on the reverse side of the metal surface, usually performed with rounded punches and hammers.
Generally, the repoussé is done first to establish the general form, and the subsequent chasing operation is used to refine, and define, the image. In the actual application, both of these operations are repeated in alternate stages until the work is complete. To support the piece of metal being worked, a resilient material, usually pitch, is used to anchor and cushion the piece as it is modeled.
This workshop will cover all aspects of the chasing and repoussé process from the initial design to the finished, fully modeled and detailed panel. Topics covered will include: the forging, shaping, hardening and tempering of chasing tools; preparation of, and working with, pitch; and modeling and refining techniques.
Please note: There will be a $10 studio fee for steel to be used in tool making.
